Advent Devotions

wreath

During the Season of Advent, many Christians mark time using an Advent Wreath.  The colored candles are for the four Sundays in Advent.  The white candle is for Christmas.  Purple is both an emblem of royalty, and a sign of penitence.  Advent is a penitential season when we prepare to meet God’s coming King.  One of the candles is pink because, when Christians used to fast during Advent, it marked the week when the fast was a bit lighter–the third week in Advent.

When you light your Advent candles, it may be meaningful to re-read and think about the collect for the week that you heard in Sunday worship.  Here is the collect for this week:

Third Sunday of Advent

Stir up your power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and, because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let your bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

Environmental Stewardship Group Forming

As catastrophic natural disasters seem to multiply all around the world, many people of faith are wondering if and how their faith tradition can inform questions of environmental stewardship.  A new group is forming at Calvary to foster discussion of this issue, and we hope the group will grow.  To help things get started, the Environmental Stewardship Study group will be hosting a discussion on Wednesday, November 20 at 7 PM in the Chapel.   The topic will be food and how food choices are related to climate change.  There will be a brief video of the documentary “Nourish” as well as a speaker from Urban Agriculture followed by open discussion.   Contact Carolyn Amparan 417-793-8600 for more information.
