Dismantling Racism Book Study January 28

BlindSpot

Calvary Episcopal Church’s Dismantling Racism team will be hosting a discussion of Blindspot: The Hidden Biases of Good People by psychologists Mahzarin R. Banaji and Anthony G. Greenwald on Thursday, January 28 at 7:00 pm in the church library. Based on their experience with the Implicit Association Test, Banaji and Greenwald examine “the extent to which our perceptions of social groups – without our awareness or conscious control – shape our likes and dislikes and our judgments about people’s character, abilities, and potential” (Amazon).  The first step to dismantling racism is seeing where it exists – even in ourselves. We hope you’ll read the book and join us for this important and thought-provoking discussion.

Game Night Fundraiser January 23

HabitatLogo

Looking for a break from the cold, dark evenings of January? Join friends and family of all ages for Calvary Winter Games Night and help raise funds for Show-Me Central Habitat for Humanity, Saturday, January 23rd, from 4:30 – 7:30 pm in Calvary’s parish hall. We will enjoy tabletop games, pizza, and some friendly team competitions. Desserts will be available to purchase and tax deductible donations (cash or check) can be made that evening to help fund the mission of bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope right here in the Columbia area. Tickets can be purchased for $8 per person in the church office or in the foyer between services on Sunday, January 10 and 17. Come join in the fun!

If you’d like to help with this event please contact Jennifer James, Rose Hayden, or Meichele Foster. There are lots of ways to get involved as we raise much-needed funds for this great cause!

Calvary serves the Homeless

RATI

Room at the Inn, an emergency winter shelter for the homeless run by local faith communities in Columbia, remains open through this Thursday, March 3. Calvary committed to provide volunteers for the first half of February, but you are welcome to help at any time, and volunteers are needed for these last days.

You can sign up directly online at this link, where you can read in more detail about volunteer responsibilities.

We thank Bob and Kathy Jones, coordinators from Calvary, and everyone who has volunteered!
