WELCOME, NEWCOMERS
The Newcomer Committee at Calvary Episcopal Church welcomes visitors and newcomers to the church through our Greeters, the friendly people with green ribbons standing near the doors, and through our Fellowship Hour hosts who serve refreshments after the 8:00 service and before and after the 10:30 service. From time to time, The Newcomer Committee also hosts brunches after worship for our newcomers.
We ask that newcomers and visitors to Calvary sign the Visitor Cards in the back of the pews and place them in the offering plate, or sign the Guestbook in the Fellowship Hall, as these are our ways of getting to know newcomers and including them in church activities. We encourage those new to us to have a coffee and snack after services, so that we may greet you and let you know of the various programs we have.
Calvary Episcopal Church is eager to share its many services, programs and activities with you, so please join us as you can. We encourage you to ask our greeters any questions you may have.

The Columbia Community
In the Heart of Missouri
Columbia reflects both the advantages of the small town life in the Midwest, nestled in the Missouri River valley, and the cultural advantages of the larger city, situated exactly halfway between two major metropolitan centers, St. Louis and Kansas City. Columbia has a small-town feel, with a number of venues for community theater, arts, and music, as well as museums, parks, and trails. But it is also a growing community; its population just topped 100,000. It boasts many of the advantages of life in a larger city, with a wide array of dining, entertainment, and sporting events.
In the heart of Missouri, you can enjoy four distinct seasons, including mild winters, hot summers, and glorious spring blossoms and fall colors. Average temperatures range from 18 in January to 88 in July.
The flagship campus of the University of Missouri system is one of the largest employers in Columbia, with over 15,000 faculty and staff, and student enrollment topping 30,000. Calvary is just a block away from campus. Columbia College and Stephens College, just a few blocks away, draw more students, helping to make Columbia “Collegetown, U.S.A.” With this focus on education, it is not surprising that Columbia’s public schools are ranked some of the best in the country.
Another hallmark of the community is health care. Columbia is second only to Rochester, MN (home of the Mayo Clinic) in patient capacity per capita, with the University’s School of Medicine and two major medical centers: the University Hospitals and Clinics and Boone Hospital Center.
With education, health care, and the insurance industry three of the major sources of employment in Columbia, the economy remains strong in the midst of a national economic decline. Unemployment remains significantly lower than the state average. The cost of living here consistently ranks lower than the national average. All of these factors contribute to Columbia being consistently ranked one of the most affordable and best places to live for people of all ages.
