The Wardrobe
The Wardrobe was started by the various churches in town getting together to gather and stock good used clothing for anyone needing it. Sometimes people are victims of burned homes, theft, or just not having resources to get clothing. Clothing is donated by anyone, thus serving a purpose to help people to clean their closets and donate good used clothing they no longer need. Clothing can also be purchased by anyone--some young families buy children’s clothes regularly at the Wardrobe and the schools often search the Golden Oldies section for costumes.
The Wardrobe Board has representatives from the various churches. The board oversees the repairs to the building, the bills (heat, water, electricity), and decides on dates for the special sale days. The sales occur twice a year at the seasonal changes.
Every month the clothing that is discarded as too worn or not usable is sent to recycling. The money made from the sale of clothing is given each fall for underwear and shoes for school-age children. They receive vouchers for these items and are able to purchase them at a lower price than the general public. Screening is done by referral from social services. Homeless people or those in dire need are also served in this manner. Tuesday is referral day.
Staffing is done by volunteers from churches in Columbia. Calvary’s day is the first Wednesday of every month. Sorting of clothing is done on Mondays by special volunteers. The Wardrobe is closed on Sunday and Monday.
