Restoration Work on our Historic Building

Have you noticed the scaffolding near the bell tower?  Not long ago, Calvary completed a major project to restore our beautiful stained glass windows.  Currently, we are in the midst of a project to repair and seal the exterior walls of the church building, on the southeast side.  The work includes tuck-pointing the stones and adding new coping to the roof.  Calvary is an historic landmark in downtown Columbia, and we want the church building to remain in good condition for decades to come.

June 2nd: Graduation and Recognition Sunday

Sunday, June 2nd is Graduation and Recognition Sunday.   This is the Sunday when we thank our Church School and Children’s Chapel teachers, and recognize all the children who have participated in these programs.  We also thank those who have sung in the Junior Choir and served as Acolytes.  Finally, we present certificates to children who have begun receiving communion this year.  Please plan to be present on this special Sunday!  There will be ICE CREAM SUNDAES FOR EVERYONE in the Parish Hall, after the 10:30 worship service!

Parents of children receiving communion for their first time in 2013, please contact the parish office ASAP with your child’s name, so that we may prepare a special certificate!  Thanks!

Rev. Jon Stratton to visit Calvary

Rev. Jon Stratton, Diocesan Missioner at the Deaconess Anne House in Old North St. Louis, will join us this coming Sunday, May 26th.  Jon will preach and teach.  The Deaconess Anne House is a new model Christian mission to the neighboring community.  It is designed to be a place where young Episcopalians can live in intentional Christian community sometime around their college or young adult years, and  can have a positive impact on the area around them, while they learn from their neighbors, and their neighbors’ needs.

It should be an interesting Sunday here at Calvary!  Come hear about the new ways Missouri Episcopalians are living out their call to follow Jesus, and help incarnate his love.

PS–Calvary’s Youth Groups are helping furnish a room at the Deaconess Anne House, and will take a mission trip there this summer!

The New Tuesday Bible Study is Growing

The new Tuesday morning Bible study is growing!  The study meets from 8:30-9:30 a.m., in Room 101.  It is led by Fr. Knute.  We begin with coffee and breakfast type snacks, and then proceed to investigate the deeper meaning of a passage from the Scripture readings for the coming Sunday.  Fr. Knute uses an inductive method, intended to help us ponder what the Scripture passage can mean for our lives today.  This group is open to any member of the parish, and group discussion is encouraged.  There is no advance preparation, and it does not presuppose deep knowledge of the Bible or the Episcopal tradition.  It’s just a great time to learn and be in fellowship with Christian friends!

Pentecost Sunday–Please wear red!

This coming Sunday, May 19th, is Pentecost, the birthday of the Christian Church.  Please come and join us in worship, as we celebrate the presence of God’s Spirit in our midst!  The Adult Formation class between services will focus on “The Gifts of the Spirit in Today’s Church”, and the lesson from Acts will be read in multiple languages.  At the 10:30 service, in addition to our regular choirs, our youngest children will help to lead us in a special song.  Come see what God is doing at Calvary!  And be prepared to see a sea of red colors!
