Pentecost Sunday–Please wear red!

This coming Sunday, May 19th, is Pentecost, the birthday of the Christian Church.  Please come and join us in worship, as we celebrate the presence of God’s Spirit in our midst!  The Adult Formation class between services will focus on “The Gifts of the Spirit in Today’s Church”, and the lesson from Acts will be read in multiple languages.  At the 10:30 service, in addition to our regular choirs, our youngest children will help to lead us in a special song.  Come see what God is doing at Calvary!  And be prepared to see a sea of red colors!

First Communion Instruction for Children

While it is the policy of the Episcopal Church that children may begin receiving communion as soon as they have been baptized (at the discretion of their parents), we at Calvary like to provide annual instruction to help our children understand the meaning of the Sacrament.  This instruction is especially tailored to help children who will be receiving communion for the first time, or who have recently begun receiving.  This year, the instruction will be provided during Children’s Chapel, from 10:30-11:10 on Sunday, April 28th, and Sunday, May 12th.  This instruction makes a great refresher course for all parish children, ages 3 or 4 through about 10 years of age.  Parents may attend these instructional sessions if they would like, but it is not necessary for them to do so.

Calvary Class to Address Health Care Decision Making Issues

April 16 has been designated as National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD)
This initiative is a collaboration among national, state and community organizations committed to ensuring that all adults with decision-making capacity in the United States have the information and opportunity to communicate and document their healthcare decisions.

The Adult Sunday School classes on April 21st and April 28th will discuss healthcare decision making while considering the teachings of the Easter season. We hope you can join us for this important discussion in an area where our Christian Faith can help inform some of life’s most important decisions, and contribute perspective to a national discussion.

Thanks to all who helped with the Inaugural FAVS Tour of Downtown Churches

Columbia Faith & Values

The inaugural FAVS tour of downtown Columbia churches was interesting and well-attended, and Calvary was pleased to be able to host the reception at the end.  A brief video of tour highlights is available here: http://columbiafavs.com/multimedia/videos/video-first-columbiafavs-downtown-church-walking-tour-a-success

Maundy Thursday Agape Meal

This year’s Agape Meal will take place in the parish hall, from 6-7pm on March 28th, Maundy Thursday. Our community meal helps us remember Jesus’ Last Supper with his disciples, where he gave them the commandment “love one another”.  The Mediterranean style dinner will be followed by the Maundy Thursday liturgy in the church.  We need people to bring breads and vegetarian soups for the Agape Meal.  If you can help out, please phone the parish office: 449-3194.

Saturdays for Seniors

Beth Simpson reports the last Saturdays for Seniors was well attended.  The only problem was that the snow the team had planned to clear off people’s driveways had already melted!  Still, the team enjoyed a hearty breakfast together before they set out, and were able to help some area seniors with some important jobs around the house.  Saturdays for Seniors is a Calvary Ministry to elderly members of the Columbia community who need an occasional helping hand around the house.

One More Lenten Soup Supper–Wednesday, March 20th

This year’s Lenten Soup Suppers have been well attended, and the soups and breads have been marvelous!  After supper, we have moved to the chapel for discussion and learning.  There is one more soup supper left!  You are welcome to attend regardless of whether you’ve been able to make any of the previous ones.  Hope to see you next Wednesday for a time of fellowship and learning as we “build community in the Spirit of Jesus.”

Easter Morning

There will be no Sunday School on Easter morning.  Instead, Church School children are invited to arrive a little before the 9:00 a.m. worship service to help dig up the Alleluia Banner, symbolizing Christ’s resurrection.  During the 9:00 Family Holy Eucharist service, children will flower the cross.  You may bring cut flowers, and we will have some extra flowers here.  We look forward to a joyous Easter morning!
