Screening of Traces of the Trade on Sunday, October 11

On October 11 following the 10:30am Sunday service, come to the parish hall for lunch and a film screening of Traces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep North. This documentary film explores the legacy of the slave trade and implicates the Episcopal Church, among others, in the legacy of slavery and racism. The screening will be followed by a community dialogue with diocesan Youth Missioner Danielle Dowd. We strongly urge you to be part of this event, to help initiate a congregation-wide dialogue on and find ways to address the problems of racism in our community and larger society.

Welcome Students and Teachers!

As the school year begins, Calvary welcomes all who are engaged in learning here in Columbia and the surrounding area. Know you are welcome to worship and parish activities, and know we are praying for you as you begin a new year of education. This prayer is from the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer:

O Eternal God, bless all schools, colleges, and universities, that they may be lively centers for sound learning, new discovery, and the pursuit of wisdom; and grant that those who teach and those who learn may find you to be the source of all truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Saturday Cafe Feeds the Hungry

brunch

Calvary is hosting the Saturday Breakfast Café every Saturday in July, August, and September.  A warm breakfast is served to guests looking for fellowship and a hearty meal.  All are welcome!  Calvary was instrumental in starting the Saturday Breakfast Café in 2009 and is proud to still be a partner in this ministry along with other downtown churches.

The Café takes place at Calvary from 8:00- 9:15 am (Volunteers begin at 7:00 am) on Saturdays.  For further information, please call the parish office at 573-449-3194.  The Calvary Café runs on volunteers and love. There is an abundance of both, and there is still room at the table.

In memoriam, with prayers for a better future

Members of Calvary ring our church bell prayerfully, in memory of those killed in the tragic shooting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Charleston, SC.  Rest eternal grant to them O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon them.

As followers of Jesus, we deplore such tragic acts of violence, and crimes against humanity which demean and diminish us all. May God grant us deliverance from such violence, and wisdom that will lead to a better future for all people.

Pentecost is Approaching! Wear Red!

images

Sunday, May 24 is the Day of Pentecost.  Pentecost celebrates the gift of the Holy Spirit to the early Christians gathered in Jerusalem.  The Spirit empowered these first disciples of Jesus to go into the world, bringing the good news of God’s salvation offered freely through Jesus.  The Apostolic preaching and modeling of new life “turned the world upside down”, and the nascent Church grew rapidly as people were attracted to its message of love, reconciliation, and healing.

The Spirit is still much at work in the world today, changing the hearts, minds and lives of those who believe, and helping them declare the love of Jesus to a world that still needs reconciliation and healing.  The red color of the Feast of Pentecost symbolizes the intensity and power of the love God’s Spirit brings.

Come join us as we celebrate the continuing presence of God’s Spirit among us, and welcome several new disciples into our midst through baptism.  If you can, wear red!
