Dismantling Racism Book Study June 16

Book Study:  The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander
Thursday, June 16 at 7:00 pm in the Calvary Library
You may have heard the statistic: the United States jails more of its citizens than any other country on earth, even police states such as North Korea and Uzbekistan. How did this happen?  On Thursday, June 16, at 7:00 pm in the Calvary library, the Dismantling Racism group will host a discussion of The New Jim Crow:  Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness, in which legal scholar Michelle Alexander gives compelling answers to this question. Alexander details how blacks and Latinos are disproportionately swept into the criminal justice system, regardless of guilt, and how they suffer legal discrimination in employment, housing, education, and public benefits even after they escape its clutches.  We hope you’ll join us for a thought provoking discussion of a book calls “a must-read for all people of conscience.”  Refreshments provided!

Valet Parking on Sundays

In a positive effort to provide assistance to those with mobility issues, Calvary is now providing an optional valet parking service on Sunday mornings.  Anyone interested in receiving the service is invited to phone the church office at 573-449-3194, ask for valet assistance, and provide an estimated time of arrival.  A member of the Parking Team will meet the person placing the request at the entrance to the alley off ninth street on the north side of the church.
At this time, we are still in need of volunteers to serve as valet drivers especially for the 8:00 am service.  If you are willing to serve, please contact Gary Shillito or the church office (573-449-3194).

Pick up a Parking Tips Pamphlet in the narthex for valuable information on downtown parking.

Wishing you a Blessed Easter Season!

Collect for the Second Sunday of Easter

Almighty and everlasting God, who in the Paschal mystery established the new covenant of reconciliation: Grant that all
who have been reborn into the fellowship of Christ’s Body may show forth in their lives what they profess by their faith;
through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

At Calvary, Columbia, it is our hope that this prayer will be a lived reality in our lives.  We pray for the presence of God’s Spirit in our midst.  Alleluia!  Christ is risen!  The Lord is risen indeed!  Alleluia!

All God’s Children Welcome in Worship!

Calvary invites you to come try our 9:00 a.m. worship service this Sunday – The Rite Place Liturgy, a joyful, contemporary setting of the Eucharist, in an especially child-friendly format. While children are welcome at all Calvary’s worship services, The Rite Place Liturgy is tailored especially for them. The Rite Place uses a simplified liturgy, contemporary music, and visuals to communicate the Gospel to the young, and young at heart! People of all ages have been enjoying this worship service since it began last autumn, and those who are new to liturgical worship have found it especially welcoming.

The Rite Place Liturgy takes place in the chapel upstairs at Calvary from 9:00-9:45 am each Sunday.  It is a Eucharistic liturgy, and there are roles for the children to help with the service.  Why not give The Rite Place Liturgy a try? We look forward to seeing you there!

Easter Worship Invitation

Come celebrate the good news of Christ’s Resurrection with us at Calvary! All are welcome on Saturday, March 26 at 8:00pm for the Great Vigil of Easter, and on Easter Sunday, March 27, at 7:30am, 9:00am, and 11:15am for festival celebrations of Holy Eucharist. We invite you to share this video invitation widely, as we spread the always-needed news that Love is stronger than death, that Christ is Risen!

Holy Thursday Agape Meal

maundy thursday

On Maundy (from the word for “commandment”) Thursday, March 24, the church remembers Jesus’ commandment to love one another, and how he shared a vision of that love at the Last Supper, when he washed his disciples’ feet and instituted the sacrament of Holy Communion. At Calvary, Maundy Thursday includes two parts: a meal in the spirit of the Last Supper called the Agape Meal, and a traditional Maundy Thursday liturgy with Holy Eucharist. The Agape Meal takes place at 6:00pm in the parish hall, followed by the liturgy in the sanctuary at 7:00pm. The liturgy concludes with the stripping of the altar, a stark enactment of the way Jesus was stripped of all earthly supports as he journeyed from the Last Supper to his crucifixion.

The Agape (pronounced a-gah-peh, a Latin word meaning unconditional love) Meal is a pot-luck style, simple vegetarian meal, and usually includes traditional Mediterranean foods such as olives, nuts, and dried fruits. At the meal, we remember the prayers that Jesus would have said at the Last Supper, and we include an invitation to wash one another’s feet. All are welcome to attend the Agape Meal, whether you have brought food to share or not, but if you are able to bring something, we would be very grateful.

Ash Wednesday Services

Almighty and everlasting God,
you hate nothing you have made
and forgive the sins of all who are penitent:
Create and make in us new and contrite hearts,
that we, worthily lamenting our sins
and acknowledging our wretchedness,
may obtain of you, the God of all mercy,
perfect remission and forgiveness;
through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
1979 Book of Common Prayer
