ELCM Monthly Reflection: God’s Presence in Lent

Mar 1, 2026

by the Rev. Josh Huber

When through the deep waters I call thee to go,
the rivers of sorrow shall not overflow;
for I will be near thee, thy troubles to bless,
and sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.
–Verse of the 18th-century hymn “How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord” attributed to “K”

This hymn, especially this verse–full as it is with the promise of God’s abiding presence in our midst–has accompanied me thus far through Lent.

May we all find God blessing our troubles and sanctifying our deepest distress as we walk the wilderness road to Easter.
