Rector

I came to Calvary in November of 2021 and have loved getting to know the parish community and COMO. I’m a lifelong Episcopalian and have a deep appreciation for Calvary’s broad and inclusive approach to Worship. My deepest love in ministry is forming relationships and watching the (often slow) work of God in the life of individuals and communities. I see that happening through: worship; ELFY gatherings (our youth group); fellowship; formation; in hospital and home visits; and, over coffee or lunch.

When I’m not at Calvary I’m probably thinking about Calvary, but either way you can find me in the kitchen baking bread or cooking for friends and loved ones; walking on one of COMO’s many trails (mostly County House and probably with a dog); singing with Choral Union, knitting, or reading.

Ask Me About:

  • Dogs or Star Wars, and what they teach me about God

  • Why Church community still matters today

  • How to listen to Christ working in your life

  • What I’m reading

The Rev. Josh Huber

The Rev. Josh Huber

Associate Rector for Parish and Campus Ministry

revjosh@calvaryonninth.org

I started attending Calvary with my wife, Angela, in the summer of 2013.  When I went away for seminary at Yale/Berkeley Divinity School in summer of 2019, Calvary was my sending parish. In the summer of 2022, I returned to Calvary as a freshly minted priest to serve both in the parish and with campus ministry (what would become the Episcopal Lutheran Campus Ministry (ELCM). In March 2024, Angela and I welcomed our son Arthur (or “Bubby”) to the world. We all love being a part of the Calvary family!

Ask Me About:

  • Poetry and faith

  • Experimenting with different services of prayer and eucharist

  • Connecting with and serving our neighboring campus communities

  • What Bubby did this week

Deacon

I came to Calvary in 1995, drawn by the liturgy and the music program. I had been a bell ringer since the 1970’s, and finding the right church with a handbell choir was important to me. Little did I know how many other blessings awaited me at Calvary!

I completed the Education for Ministry course in 2003 and announced at the conclusion that I thought I might be called to be a deacon. My classmates affirmed that call.

Calvary’s heart for service engaged and equipped me over the next few years. I was ordained in November 2015 and served for five years at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Mexico, MO. After a very brief “retirement,” the Bishop called me to return to Calvary in 2021. It is a joy to serve with this congregation of creative and generous people who might be the best cooks in Columbia!

Before I was a deacon, I served as a youth director in a United Methodist Church, a volunteer coordinator for Missouri Interfaith Disaster Response Network after the Flood of 1993, and as Director of the Long-term Care Ombudsman Program in Central Missouri. I serve on the Board of Directors of The Bluffs, a 132-bed skilled nursing community.

Ask Me About:

  • Growing up in Mississippi during the 1950s
  • Our amazing children, a professor and a puppeteer!
  • What my husband means when he says that I “failed retirement three times”
  • What is an Ombudsman?

N Cotner

Director of Administration and Facilities

ncotner@calvaryonninth.org

I have been a member of Calvary since I was baptized here as an infant. During that time, I’ve been a member of the choir and bell ensemble, and have helped run the audio and live streams as a member of the IT team.

In summer of 2025, I was hired to the position of Assistant to the Rector, then in 2026, I moved into the position of Director of Administration and Facilities. I oversee church communication — such as newsletters and bulletins — as well as the use and maintenance of Church Facilities.

Ask Me About:

  • The Calvary News email
  • Growing up at Calvary
  • Music (especially church music)
  • Board games
Connie Carpenter

Connie Carpenter

Finance Manager

ccarpenter@calvaryonninth.org

After retiring from hospital pharmacy and earning a degree in anthropology, I was looking for a job in the nonprofit sector working with unhoused or marginally housed people. Fr. Knute Jacobson was aware of my search and called me to see if I could work as a Parish Administrator at Calvary for a while to get them by. I joined Calvary’s staff in 2014 and never left. In 2026, I accepted a part-time position as the Financial Administrator for my last year at Calvary.  I have learned a lot at Calvary and truly enjoy working with the parishioners, staff and whoever comes to the door.

Ask Me About:

  • Pledges
  • Purchases & Reimbursements
  • Along with Ron Webb, the church treasurer, we would be happy to answer questions about the finances of the church.
Katie Bolton

Katie Bolton

Executive Assistant

kbolton@calvaryonninth.org

My family began attending Calvary in 2023 and quickly fell in love with the church’s theological beliefs and community. I officially joined the staff team in 2026 to further extend my commitment. In my role, I oversee church events; newcomers; Safe Church compliance; and general office administration.

Outside of my ministry work, I enjoy woodworking; various fiber arts and papercrafts; playing bari sax; hiking; board games; and spending time with my husband and our two daughters.

Ask Me About:

  • The current events happening at Calvary
  • Anything band or music
  • My favorite woodworking tips
  • The best places to visit along the Oregon coast
Ed Hanson

Ed Hanson

Music Director

music@calvaryonninth.org

I was first hired to lead Calvary’s music programs in 1985. Although I have “retired” several times over the years, I always seem to find my way back. Besides leading the Cambridge Choir and the Calvary Handbell Ensemble, I also select the service music and hymns for each service. I am grateful to the church staff, the congregation, and all the church musicians for helping to create a supportive and musical environment! My side passions include theatre and classical music.

Barb Berwin

Barb Berwin

Organist

bberwin@centralmethodist.edu

I began serving as organist and pianist at Calvary Episcopal in August 2021. I have enjoyed getting to know more about the Episcopal faith and worshiping alongside the staff and congregants. I love playing for the Cambridge Choir and working with Ed to musically enhance the Sunday services. I also have worked as a Professor Music in the Fine Arts Division of Central Methodist University since 1996. I live with my husband and three fur babies in a beautiful and quiet subdivision just outside of New Franklin.

Ask Me About:

  • How many thoughts an organist can process during a single Sunday service
  • Why I prefer teaching freshmen
  • Why I write children’s picture books about my cat
  • My feelings about garden statues

Calvary Vestry

The vestry is the lay leadership of the parish. This ministry is one of prayer, community building, stewardship of the many gifts present in the parish, and administration of the church’s property and finances. Vestry members are elected by the congregation to serve three-year terms.
